Mistletoe

Well, I stood under this tree for about 3 hours and nothing happened so I thought I'd take a picture and share it with you.

During the winter, balls of mistletoe stand out against bare branches, but now they are slowly disappearing as the hardwoods leaf out.

When I was a kid, we would take the shotgun and shoot mistletoe out of the trees to use as Christmas decorations. It always seemed to grow way up high in branches too flimsy to climb. This shotgun method actually worked quite well.

On an unrelated note, I can't access blogspot domains from work anymore and at home, Katie has commandeered the computer as she frantically works on her senior economics thesis (it's about sweatshops).
What this means is I can barely post this tiny bit and for a few days, I'll probably be unable to make the rounds and comment as much. Sorry.

Spring break begins Friday afternoon tho... Posted by Picasa

I've never seen a mistletoe like that one before, LOL.

When we went back to g'ville last week, I discovered my wild azalea was blooming also. That would be the first time I have ever seen it bloom since I planted it 9 years ago. We just haven't been in g'ville at the time it choose to bloom!
Took a pict of it, i'll post it later.

got a kick out of your dogwood "wig", too! Nice lookin goatee! it matches the wig. ;) LOL!

happy spring!

Interesting! I can't say that I've ever seen mistletoe live!

As far as blogging, welcome to my world. Lightnin pretty much hogs the computer at home, but I can't seem to get her to blog for me!

Never heard of harvesting misletoe with a shotgun before. I think that method would work great with watermellon too.

Get thee your own computer, preferably with a wireless connection to your home high-speed internet. I'd toss a couple bucks into a fund for that.

Nice picture of the mistletoe. It's been known to grow as far north as southern Missouri, but I don't think Roundrock is south enuf to make the cut. I've never seen any there.

Sheesh, FC, everybody knows that you use a rifle to shoot down mistletoe, not a shotgun!

My Dad always had me climb the tree and point to the best place to shoot. Sometimes he got a little too close ;-)

I didn't know you had to hunt mistletoe and bring it down with guns blazing. And it looks so peaceful up there.

Hope Katie does a great job on her senior economics thesis.

We'll miss your comments, but understand your absence.

Okay I got home early, no one is hogging the 'puter and I get to play for 15 minutes!

Laura,
Those wild azaleas are really scraggly looking until they bloom. Glad you got to enjoy yours finally. I think that chin needed a good dose of Just For Men. Instead it got the razor.

ThunderDave,
And all this time I thought she catered to your every whim...

John,
Shades of Mr. Majestyk.

Pablo,
LOL! Wireless! Home high speed network!!! Imagine living at RR...any DSL or cable nearby? You are one funny urban guy. I am getting a laptop finally...
Don't you think it odd that my Celtic anscestors had mistletoe in cold Britain, yet it grows in the south here in NA.

Rurality,
Remind me to wear my kevlar helmet next time I'm in north central Alabama.

Kevin,
Now,now, those scars only add to your manliness.

RD,
I actually sold it on the street in downtown St. Augustine one Christmas. I had a little tray of hollyberry branches and mistletoe and people snapped it up.

huh. It always, even real, looks fake to me the way we get it packaged up here. Nice to know there's the real deal. I love that vision of you selling it on the street.

I second pablo's suggestion. My kids are getting to the age where they hog the computer, and the oldest is only 8...sheesh...but we now have a second computer with wireless.

Mistletoe - do you mark a good bunch for later in the year.
Three hours hum and not even a racoon or skunk gave you a nibble. Better luck round December.

The Smith boys down the street from me (when I was a kid in Georgia) would shoot mistletoe out of the trees in December and haul it door to door in their red wagon. This piece? 25 cents, it's kinda small and raggedy. That one is a dollar, 'cause it's got so many berries. My mom always bought mistletoe from them.

Slaving away on a paper about sweatshops. The irony.

Deb,
We'd have to go satellite for wireless or any broadband...still to far out.

Doubleknot,
I think I was out of season :)

Leslie,
I sold mine for the same price, but it was 1971.

Hey, I am looking to get some fresh mistletoe myself. Where is a good spot to get some. I live in Tampa, but am willing to drive a while.

Thanks,
David
