Life Under Pressure

Get It?

A symbolic photo.

No time to explain. Gotta leave early today.

...maybe this evening after soccer practice, I can check your answers.

Update: 2130 hours

Jr. was nice (ham) enough to pose for me. It's a sign of his hamminess and his familiarity with his goofy Dad that he never questioned why he was putting a 15 pound turkey on his head.

I was really looking for a 14.7 pound turkey, but I could only find this 14.5 pounder. I suppose the graniteware might give me the extra ounces I need to be "sorta accurate". Why don't we just round this to 15 pounds for simplicity.

So why the turkey on Jr.'s head? I'm working on a Powerpoint for my marine science class and I want my little brainiacs to visualize earth's atmospheric pressure of 14.7 pounds per square inch (psi).

It's one thing to say, "Atmospheric pressure at sealevel is about 14.7 psi", but it's a very different thing to say, " Every square inch of your body is feeling the weight of a 15 pound turkey"

Which would mean more to you?

I usually bring in one of my dumbells (STOP IT! BE NICE) so they can get a feel for the reality of 15 pounds.

Remember, the photo is symbolic. The pressure is not just applied to your head, it's applied equally over your body. It would have been more accurate to impale the turkey on a on inch dowel and have that balanced on Jr.'s head. Ouch.

Let's see, the average human has about 19 square feet of skin. One square foot = 144 square inches ... 19 multiplied by 144 = 2736 dowels and 2736 15 pound turkeys.

Feeling the pressure yet?

Be glad it's there. It's this pressure that keeps your body fluids from boiling away in a cloud of red mist.

Hmmmm, up here in the North we used to play with Mr. Potato Head. Is this a Mr. Turkey Head?????

Can the heat generated by your brain cook a turkey?

Turkey on your mind?

Something this heavy is easier carried on one's head?

the background looks almost like your moms kitchen looking towards the front door, the turkey reminds me of cooler weather to come Thanksgiving

FC-
No offence to Jr but I think this photo should be named "Bird Brain"

He's already thinking about Thanksgiving break, now that Labor Day is over.

The pressure of a turkey?

I know...some turkey at school has assigned you to more extracurricular activities, as if you already didn't have enough to do.

Or
Your son has pressured you into being the soccer coach. (That probably wouldn't take much pressure because that would be more like pleasure.)

Was this even a guessing game?

I know we are getting our turkey fryer ready for the numerous practice meals until Thanksgiving. I especially love frying some sweet potatoes. We camp every Thanksgiving, so it is very important to have the taste of the season perfected!

I am clueless. Totally clueless.

Yeah, I'm with Deb. Was this a quiz, teach?

ThreeCollie,
He's definitely a turkey.

Tuffy,
Not the heat from his brain.

Rick,
Cooler weather ... can't wait. Will have to tho...

Lightnin,
...and he is!

Robin,
I think that's probably true. Holiday to holiday.

Sandy,
I'm not cut from the coach mold, but I do love to see he and his sister play soccer. The answer is school related tho.

Boating Family,
How neat. We always go over the river and through the woods to grandmas. I'm all for practicing with the fryer tho.

Deb,
At last! Now you know how I feel when you do a music post :)

Pablo,
Sort of...only without the lesson. I have updated now tho.

I feel like I have 500lbs of pressure on every inch of my body most days, lately... that's why I haven't been around *blush*

My apologies, and in the future I'll try to remind myself that it's only 15lbs and that it can't possibly be 500lbs, or I'd be dead (I presume).

Mrs. S,
Take it easy. That's precious cargo you're carrying.

Ahhh, hands on teaching, awesome! When I was in school in the 70's, we were taught to memorize these facts, over and over again. No wonder it didn't make sense at the time. I'm so glad times have changed.

Your students are lucky to have such a creative, open minded instructor!

Laura,
I'm lucky to have indentured photo models!

Wow...I didn't know that. That's so interesting. No wonder I feel so heavy...I'm carrying sooo many turkeys.*LOL*

(I know it's pressure, not weight).

Sandy,
Now you can say, " Back Off! Can't you see I'm under pressure!"

Well, once again I'm late but chalk it up to the early part of the week.

You did mean 760 torr, didn't you? I almost didn't recognize that 14.7.

Wow that's classic. Great way of expressing that to your students.

Wayne,
I always digress from my beloved metric when discussing pressure in Marine Science class...it's the SCUBA diver in me. I know I shouldn't but yet I do.

Hurricane Teen,
Thanks. I thought you could appreciate that.
