Dry Dock

My brain is so preoccupied with grading papers, exams, my own continuing education, and Christmas shopping that I am forced to post my sneakers.

Sneakers ... that reminds me, last night when I went to bring in the baby turtles, there was a rustling in the bushes.

It turned out to be an armadillo, so I called Fearless Feather off her warm porch pillow nest, and we sneakered up on the 'dillo.

It took off and usually that's the end of the chase, but this one decided to hide under my dead truck (I heard that! Am not a redneck!are so! am not! are ...).

This increased the catchnicity probability by a factor of ten, so Feather and I surrounded the old GMC. The 'dillo moved from side to side as Feather and I revolved around the truck. The dillo was actually panting harder than me or Feather. This was a point of pride between Feather and I, as she is almost 77 and I am 336 years old.

At one point, Feather spooked it towards me, and for a moment I had it by the tail. The thought passed through my mind (they often do this and usually just keep on going) that it was going to be really hard to get the camera out of the case with one hand while holding a kicking 'dillo with the other, but the 'dillo took care of that little challenge by digging in and pulling free.

It bounded off into the woods with Feather following, and Flounder wondering what all the commotion was about. He was late to the party as usual.

With all the 'dillo chasing excitement, I forgot to bring in the baby turtles, so I had to go back out a little later, but that was a pretty routine trip.

Now, I must get back to work on this beautiful Sunday morning.

Supper tonight:

Barbequed chicken, slow cooked over oak.
Fresh broccoli
Herbed potato wedges

We had roasted yucca "fries" with dinner last night. Have you ever had those? Quite yummy.

I'm sipping my lightly sweetened English Breakfast tea right now. It tastes very, very good.

robin,
I haven't had yucca fries ... yet.
My wife likes English Breakfast, but Darjeeling is her favorite.
I'm sipping a mug of Green Tea ...unsweetened of course.

I went through a brief unsweetened tea phase but returned to my true southern roots - if it's iced it had better be sweet and the sweet had better be from pure cane sugar stirred in while the tea was hot. If you can't give me that, I'll just drink water.

Now, hot tea is a different matter all together. I take that hot and unsweetened.

(I am having so much fun on my S-I-L's computer. The pictures load immediately.)

Jest think how much yer recipe would be improved with "Barbecued armadillo"....

Swampy,
I just don't drink sweet drinks and in truth, I'm an icewater guzzler. Not much for sodas, snapple, or that stuff.
It's not a health thing, I just don't find sweet drinks thirst quenching.

Hoss,
I'm so stuffed with some of the best BBQ chicken I ever made that a roast armadillo doesn't even sound good right now.

What's this about unsweetened ice tea??

I've got two blogs focusing on Tampa and Florida - any interest in a link exchange?

Colleen,
Welcome to Pure Florida!
You never know which direction the comments will take you. It seems like ice tea is the focus of this conversation. Gotta love it.

I'd be glad to exchange links!

OOPS! Sorry Mel,

Sounds like a great dinner. I don't know, in these northern climates lately we just don't have the appetite once dinner time rolls around. If we didn't have the kids here, Hermit and I would not eat. But if we did, of course we'd have the tea unsweetened, with a little fresh lemon.

I'll trade you a badger for an armadillo. ;)

Deb,
A badger here would be like a guided anti-armadillo missile. No longer would their burrows be a safe haven.

Send 10.

:)

Wings ...yum. We know what our next cookapalooza will be!

Alan,
It really isn't down here, but I enjoy strange looks from waitresses when I ask for UNsweet tea.
