Woodstork Wadin'

This woodie was feeding in the Savannas Preserve down at Fort Pierce back in June.

Woodies have a feeding style that is different from most waders. They swish their parted bill back and forth in the water until something gets close enough and then CHOMP!

This one was also using the snowy egret foot wiggle to scare prey critters out from their hiding places.

It was kind of breezy so you may not want the volume up on this one.

Hey! A stork! They bring babies to people, y'know.

The foot wiggle is obviously a learned behavior and not purely instinctive for the stork, smart bird! I bet he/she wouldn't get stung by a sting ray! ;-)

(I know, I know it's a fresh water bird)

They are neat birds, despite having a face only a mother could love! We watched them riding the air currents over the cypress trees in the Corkscrew Swamp, what a view they have from up there.

Caroline is so lucky! I would love to go to Corkscrew Swamp! The woodies always nest there in the cypress. I bet the babies are just the cutest!
