The Irony Of This Does Not Escape Me

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
The windshield of my JEEP gets taken out by a vulture?

The very same JEEP that carried an injured vulture across the damn state in search of a wildlife rescue vet just about two weeks ago?

What was that about "good karma" coming to me for being kind to a vulture?

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday !

Good grief! I had just traveled 2 hours and 125 miles from St. Augustine and was literally within one mile of PFHQ when I spied a flock of vultures feeding on a dead deer at about the 11 O'clock position.

I slowed down, but obviously not enough, since one lumbering bird, ... probably overloaded with deer guts, swooped up and then down into my windshield.

CRACK!
Instant spider web crackle pattern instead of clear glass.

I drove the remaining mile in a state of disbelief.

Is it just me, or is this just a wee bit ironic?

That is like 10,000 spoons when all you needed was a knife.

More seriously though that is really really bad luck although obviously the main thing is you're ok.

I've often wondered how many black vultures get hit. They seem entirely to casual about the whole oncoming car thing.

Bless your heart! That just ain't right.

Sheesh --- your poor JEEP has really taken a beating this week. Vultures -- really, they aren't very appreciative of all you did for one of the brethren.

Hope next week is a better week for you AND the JEEP.

Ah yes. The "no good deed goes unpunished" syndrome. Glad you made it home safely.

WV - millyin. By jove, I can think of a millyin things that I thought I needed before new windshield even makes the list. (I know, sick humor - it's all I've got.) KS reader

I'm so sorry, but I can't help but laugh. I know it isn't funny and it's going to be a pain to get it fixed and all, but still... Karma can be a bitch!

Perhaps they weren't happy that you rescued some of their competition for deer guts?

Also, I'm guessing that if the vulture who cracked your windshield was hurt, you didn't worry about helping him...

some days you're the bug, some days you're the windshield. it will all be better when your biorythms cross over. meanwhile, was the vulture ok?

That is just wrong. Poor Jeep

Ohhh man...wow. that sux. that is so much like the time I rescued that cormorant and those people called me for like 3 days interrogating me about where I got it; like I kidnapped the thing or something, or had injured it myself. grrr...
hope things improve quickly.

I hope you have good insurance and that the agent does not laugh when you call to report the damage. Do you think they will replace the seat as well? Maybe you were marked and that's where the bad luck is coming from.

Island Rider said...

Oh, my husand just said to tell you it could have been worse. We have a friend who hit a pelican on the top of the Skyway Bridge. With his motorcycle! That windshield cracked also.

Maybe the vulture was just trying to get close enough to thank you for saving the other one, but overshot it a bit. Yes, I think that must be it.

Oh boy. I hope you are ok. That poor Jeep has had some bad mojo lately.

i think your vulture friend put a hit out on you and the jeep. be careful out there!

I bet the vulture just smelled his/her buddy on your seat...they do have an excellent sense of smell...oh, wait, that's turkey vultures...I guess it was just bad luck.

Poor JEEP! It sure has been through a lot lately. Isn't there some kind of deal where windshields are replaced free? Or does that not included avian accidents? Just a WEE bit ironic, yes. Not sure if having one barf - discharging ballast - on you and JEEP would've been any better. *shudder*

Did you know that vultures won't eat dead vultures? Or so I've been told. Reckon they think, 'who knows what killed it, so better not take a chance'. I do know that RKV's seem to last a lot longer than other RK critters.

Re using your laptop at McD's and such... is there a public library near your parents' house? You should be able to plug it in there.

So, did the vulture survive?

Dani said...

Oh hell no!!!!!

nfmgirl said...

@SophieMae: I have to wonder whether this may be true. We have flocks of hundreds of vultures around here, and roadkill rarely escapes them, yet a dead vulture laid untouched for weeks.

Like you don't have enough to deal with right now?

At least in PA its turkeys and you can eat them.

Wow, just Wow!
That did not just happen!!!??
Speechless.
That sucks.

i'll go with ironic. glad you are OK and were so close to home.

also glad mom's recovering well and in good spirits.

Holy toledo...bet that got your full attention! Glad you are okay..and dang those Turkey Vultures are so big.

Felicia said...

Oh man, that's sad. Those vultures owe you one! I've noticed the black vultures tend to get out of the way of approaching cars just in time, while the turkey vultures are slower (and unfortunately, a lot bigger).

Thank goodness you're safe and didn't have far to drive with that shattered windshield.

That's just stinkin' funny! JEEP is a vulture magnet!

I'm glad you were not hurt, and hope your insurance fully covers it...but otherwise ~ it's STINKIN' FUNNY!

Maybe you can convince the insurance to include new seats since the vulture stink-ified seat created a vulture magnet.

You should have stayed for lunch.

Some days the Dragon wins....poor JEEP.

Ouch!

"No good deed punishment goes unpublished" ... LOL! Thank you for "feeling my pain" even if you did get a chuckle out of the irony.

Go ahead and admit it. I laughed too after I got over the, "OH HELL NO!" shock (Too funny Dani).

And yes, Kevin, OLD friend, perhaps I should have stayed for lunch. Cracked me up. I should respect my elders, I suppose.

Since Florida requires insurance companies to fix or replace winshields with no deductible, this is not such a painful thing.
They are actually coming to my residence to replace the windshield tomorrow.

Soon, the "vulture magnet" will be on the road again.

Aunty,
I may have to switch from Hughesnet to a Verizon intenet thingie!

kevin said...

"OLD" friend. I get it. Only a couple more days for you. And yes, you should respect your elders.

More than a "wee" bit ironic, methinks.

Perhaps you could build better karma by rescue more vultures?

I had to go find this post. All I can say is Arrggh. And I am glad to have seen the JEEP in fully restored, still a little tapey condition. My goodness that JEEP was immaculate, and parked in good pasture, away from the rabble.
Meeting you: the bomb.
