Blueberry Morning

If a blueberry falls in the blueberry patch, and there's no one around, ... except you and a loudly buzzing ruby throated hummingbird feeding at the coral bean plant that volunteered in the middle of the blueberry patch and is now thrusting beautiful red flower spikes to the sky ... does it make any sound?

The berry I mean.
That sentence was so long I figured you probably forgot the original subject.

The blueberry harvest has begun here at PFHQ.

Apparently it actually began last weekend when Emma mentioned she had picked and eaten a handful of blue beauties.

I picked berries this morning surrounded by blueberry bushes which tower over me even while leaning under the weight of thousands of clustered berries. The morning bird call cacophony and the hum of that very persistent hummer made the job not a job at all.

It's 8:38 am, the scones, laden with fresh picked berries have about two minutes to go.

Oh, and a doe just tip-toed across the lawn.

I love a good blueberry morning.

Glad to see you have a hummer feeder in that shot, but you'll be doing them a favor if you use uncolored sugar water (1:4)!!

Do raspberries grow up your way too?

Myamuh,
What is the issue with the red?
Educate me, please.
As for raspberries, there is that Mysore red raspberry, but my experience with it is dismal. I'm sticking with good ol' blackberries in that briar fruit category.

You made scones this morning? Wow. I wish I could have dropped by for a taste. That looks delicious. You remind me that we should plant blueberries and raspberries. I'll have to check if they can survive a freeze. Ah, the season of fruit.

FC, I'd love a blueberry morning too, we be havin snowflakes in the air this morning, making for blue fingers but not from berry pickin'

FC, think natural.
Why add an artificial colorant that some would say is harmful if the hummers will come to a natural (clear) nectar?
The red of your feeder is more than enough color to help them find their way to it.
And I've found that friends who use red nectar tend to be more lax about changing the "juice" often enough because it doesn't look "bad". Clear nectar shows pretty quickly when it starts to get cloudy, red can hide rancid stuff much more easily.

Oh, that razor-sharp myamuhnative beat me to it! Never underestimate the scrutiny of your most faithful fans. Truthfully I was so busy drooling over the fresh blueberry scone I didn't notice the hummingbird hazmat.

Here's a little post with which you can amuse (or flagellate) yourself.

How's poor lil' Bear? ;-)

Sounds like a perfect Sunday morning.

Except for the fact that you now have to flagellate yourself.

You have the bessst readers!

To All Above,
Flagellation complete. I used sandspurs ... will that do?
No more red hummer juice at PFHQ!
Thank you for the education.

And yes, Julie, they are wonderful in their diversity and breadth of knowledge.

We don't have blueberries yet. Red Dragon Farm has lots of bushes and we seem to be at least a month behind you in berry production. Weird, as we're not that far apart. Perhaps it has to do with the kind of blueberry bush?

R.Powers said...

Sayre,
This particular bush is way ahead of most of my other bushes.

Meanwhile, almost 6000 miles away, a native Floridian living in Greece has to make do with a Starbucks Skinny Blueberry Muffin. Hope you had a glorious morning :)

Hi Jay,
Welcome to Pure Florida!
Enjoy the great Mediterranean food!

I love blueberries and they are my favorite! Great for antioxidants and that scone looks delicious. Send some over, FC! I've yet to see a hummingbird down here. I've been told they ARE here but have never seen one in six years! Seen plenty in Michigan and L.A. Thanks for the sweet little video!
