This young red-shouldered hawk may have been born this year, but he wasn't born yesterday ... notice he's smart enough to get out of the heat and into some shade. |
I took these photos a few weeks ago when the pond was almost dry (again). The hawk was perched in a willow that overlooked the two tiny puddles. It was a pretty good ambush spot for thirsty birds and randy frogs that were attracted by the promise of water.
I think things are quite different down at the pond right now, because we had a whopper of a thunderstorm last night with wall rattling thunder and torrential rains.
I was not allowed to go out during the storm and check out the pond water levels, but I will today after work.
I know the frogs were really singing as the rain fell in torrents, so I am expecting to find actual water in my pond.

Someone has to keep an eye on you. Of course you can't go out in a thunderstorm. Lightening comes with those thunderstorms. Lightening kills. Silly boy. I am sure the frogs are hoppin to the water if there is any. The hawk loves it when the meals congregate.
Great video by the way. That hawk looked pretty hungry to me. Poor frogs ;)
That was some storm we had! Sky turned pitch black and the wind was just a howlin'.
I'm eager to see if you have much water in your pond. If you have any excess, ship it to me. My lake is down about 6 feet. Maybe Irene will help.
Yay for pond water!

Are you expecting more pond water from Irene??
I got caught out in a cypress stand during an unexpected rain storm earlier today. It went from sunny sky to downpour and there wasn't even any thunder. That probably explains why is snuck up me.
aw, he's a beauty!!
Ya shure have good stuff out yore front door.
How was the first week of school fer yore Emma? An' yoreself? New school is delighted to have ya, I'se shure 'bout that.
I have a young hawk who greets me every morning now. He perches on the gate to the round pen and looks magestic. I know he is young because he is contstantly whining. Probably wants the car keys. Or a cell phone.
Nice job of ID, FC.
