My son caught his first snake last week. I'm so proud! Of course after he brought it to me, we had a quiz about the 5 poisonous snakes in Florida and what they look like. He passed...whew!This was a great one to start with. It's a totally harmless Ringneck Snake. They are very small and pretty docile. We took a few pictures and then he put it back where he found it.

It's amazing the number of people that kill all snakes without regard to their usefullness. I try to catch every snake I see. I'm not Steve Irvin, but I do a pretty good job, even on poisonous snakes. We used to sell them (live) to Ross Allen at the Alligator Farm in St.Augustine. They milked them to make anti-venin.
I know, I don't understand the kill all snakes mentality. Remember Ross Allen? He was the Steve Irwin of his day back in pre-Disneyfied Florida. He was my hero as kid in St. Augustine.
Yeah, I remember Ross Allen, he had the Reptile Institute at Silver Springs then at the Alligator Farm. He/they would buy live poisonous snakes from us to milk.
Did you ever see the photos of his hands from all the snake bites? They made me think twice about handling snakes. I guess was either lucky or good, I've caught a lot of snakes and never been bitten.
Yes I remember that photo. It was pretty scary.
I saw a snake today. I trapped it. I was hesitant at first because I dont know much about snakes, (or dont know much about anything for that matter).
I googled it, and believe its a "common ring neck snake". About 4 inches long, a baby snake. I still have it.
It looked dead to me. It didnt move, not even when I got close. Looks like it was looking for water because we live next to a canal. And it was really hot today.
What should I do? Take pictures maybe? Animal Control? Not the first time I see a baby snake just like this one. And if theres a mama there has to be a papa and a mama somewhere.
