Knock, Knock, Knocking On Heaven's Door

Hairy Woodpecker? Too big for a Downy, right?

This guy was in Devil's Hammock Wildlife Management Area.
Devil's Hammock is a favorite spot of mine, because I can skip the asphalt and drive partially home from work along the dirt roads, woods and swamps of the 6000 acre WMA.

In the video, you can hear what drew me to him.

Funky looking little bird, or was it a bit windy?

We have quite a few woodpeckers that come to the feeders. I think they are so neat to watch and of course listen to!

Got to see a pair mating last spring in the yard. It was so cool! All kinds of chattering and aerial displays with each other.

Looks like a Hairy to me. They're starting to drum on trees around here. Another sign of spring!

Dave,
Yes, it was breezy!

Lisa,
I love their calls and their swoopy flight pattern.

Dani,
That sounds neat.

Deb,
I thought he must be, seemed too big for a downy. That's a zoomed in shot, he was waaay up in that tree.

We have the red headed woodpecker living in one of our trees. I love them.

The local parks are always the best in the way you informally get to know them ...

Gonna go against the grain and say that it looks more like a Downy to me. Going by relative bill size. But I could be wrong.

I vote for Downy, the great drumming sounds just like the Downy that greats me when I arrive at work everyday.

I think Downy, too. Right now, 'snag forest' at Bpyd Hill- an area we keep esp. for flickers, hairys, downys and pileateds is a regular percussion section of rhythm. I'll try to snag a video for you this weekend. Better yet, you could take a little day trip to visit Emma and swing by Boyd Hill for Wild Life weekend. Free park tram rides, BOP education shows (I'm doing ESOs and RSHs) snake hadnling (this is RIGHT up your alley!) free native trees, screech owl boxes, etc. It is a happening place and free, free, free. Bring you camera and I'll give you a private tour and then direct you to Chattaways for fried chicken. And, if you come, bring pepper seeds. :-)

I don't have an opinion about Hairy or Downy, but that sound is fantastic.

Jean,
Wow. I love redheaded wp's. They seem to be a rare sight around here.

Robert,
It's all good.

Rurality,
Fine with me! That's why I posted. I just thought it seemed a little big.

Julie,
Thanks for the input! How neat to hear that each day!

Vicki,
Yikes! That sounds great! Emma is HERE this weekend ... spring break and all.
Timing is everything and mine is often off.
Thanks anyway!!!!

Robin,
We are in the same boat.

Nice photo--we has a few visit us--the oak trees an' the bird feeder, an' I like how they ain't scared off by other birds.

I'm thinking downy.

Aunty,
Tonight, the pileateds were calling and drumming back and forth around my house. Sweet!

Julie,
That's good enough for me!

We get pileateds and ladderbacks, and hearing that sound on the side of the house (cedar siding) is less than pleasing... They're persistant buggers, and probably have a good bird laugh at the crazy lady waving her arms at them.

Here by way of that nutty Miz S...
